WinProof is a major advance over existing grammar checkers. It goes beyond simple grammar checking and it can actually proofread like a person and catch non-English constructions created by careless typing errors. You can give other grammar checkers totally garbled sentences and they won't flag a thing because they have no actual idea of how to parse the sentence precisely. While WinProof isn't perfect in this respect either, you'll be glad when it finds that one sentence where you typed "it" instead of "is". While I was composing this web page, I found a mistake in the sentence:
"However, the main selling point over other grammar checkers _it_ that it can actually proofread like a person and catch non-English constructions created by careless typing errors."
Winproof does catch the "it" instead of "is", by saying "that" followed by "it" is unusual usage. The correction is not automatic, but you can usually figure out the mistake when it is pointed out to you. The grammar checker in Microsoft Word doesn't detect anything wrong with this sentence. These are actually the most common and serious errors, but these do not correspond to any particular "grammar" rule.
Here are some other errors that are detected by WinProof but are ignored by the grammar checker in Microsoft Word 2000.
This section will vary based on _the_ what is required to communicate the design.
Leave the approval date blank to see _if_ get message.
The user can choose to uninstall it and the previously mentioned tools will be _function_ again.
Drop _you_ device in the cradle now in order to import data to the server
The entry screen will be _show_ to the user.
You can see how you could easily miss these errors, but they are very embarrassing.
WinProof uses a revolutionary language processing system which knows what words can be combined and flags an error when it sees an illegal combination. This gives WinProof the ability to catch arbitrary sentence construction errors without flagging lots of good sentences. The program can also detect spelling errors and provides corrections.
The program works by proofreading text that you have copied to the clipboard. It cannot directly read or modify your word processor document. You will need to make any corrections found by WinProof by manually editing your document in your word processor.
WinProof automatically provides suggested corrections for grammar errors and rewrites sentences. You can also create your own custom grammar rules. Requires MS-Windows 3.1,95,98,NT,2000, XP From Intellect Systems. $40.00 shareware registration fee.
